Upon entering La Peña, one of Austin’s premiere non-profit arts organizations, you are engulfed with the sights and colors of old Mexico. Everything from paletas, bottles of Jarritos soda, and images of indigenous Mexican culture envelope the space, located on the corner of Third and Congress, right in the heart of Austin, Texas.
The organization, which was founded in 1981 and gained tax-exempt status in 1985, seeks to support artists in a multitude of mediums. La Peña has been host to musical acts, poets, visual artists, and other performing artists. The goal to encompass traditional and contemporary Latino art and ultimately present the work to the central Texas community is definitely one to applaud.
La Peña’s co-founder, Cynthia Pérez, took the organization’s name in reference to the South American tradition of “peñas.” These are small communal gatherings, often of artists, created to share ideas, music, poetry and visual art. La Peña continues this tradition in a city already rich with art and amplifies that by complementing it with a Latino aesthetic.
The Latino artwork can be seen before even entering the gallery space. The gift shop has several goods from all over Latin America. Small jewelry, pottery, t-shirts, key chains, and books can all be had for affordable prices. The gifts range from gorgeous earrings and necklaces, to humorous clothing for our friends and family. Most exciting of all is the opportunity to buy prints from the very artists that have been supported by La Peña through gallery showings.
Past the gift shop is the gallery itself. The work varies depending on whose art is being displayed, but you can always count on one thing: it is always beautiful and intriguing. The art displayed ranges from traditional pieces inspired by Mayan and Aztec imagery to more contemporary Latino artwork. There is an array of styles from abstract, historical, romantic, sexual, violent, dark, and brilliant–and some that incorporate two or more styles to convey their message. The selections are accompanied by artist biographies and captions.
Because of its non-profit status, La Peña relies on the support and generosity of art supporters and patrons to continue its mission. Enrolling as a member of La Peña is a tremendous way to support the local Latino arts movement in central Texas. Members enjoy complimentary admission to gallery openings, musical events, and free food and beverages at events. Annual membership cost is $20 for students and $35 for all other patrons. All contributions are tax-deductible.
Truly an arts organization to admire, La Peña gives local artists invaluable support. Stop by the gallery and revel in the one of a kind artwork. Visit the gift shop and get something for a loved one. You can even snack on a paleta. Do any and all of this for the sake of supporting our wonderful Latino art scene.
